Thoughts on Wikis in Education
After watching the short video on wikis, I believe there are some positive uses for them in the education system. I think can help a great deal in the planning of lessons and curriculum. This could be effective at both the individual school level and the district level. Meaning all of the schools could link to a wiki to coordinate material being taught. The district and those professionals overseeing this could assist the schools in this accordingly.
I enjoyed the article “Considering a New Avenue of Communication: The Weblog” by Steve Cernohous. I liked how he referred to the blog as a personal diary exposed and maintained on the internet for all to see. I never thought of it in such terms. He wrote of educational importance and how the blogs can help the students develop in their own collaboration using blogs. I thought it was important that blogs can also help the educator learn more about students’ prior knowledge and the educational perspective they reveal.
My thoughts on wikis simply are they can be used as a collaborative tool in education. I do not believe they should be cited or relied upon solely for pertinent information. In other words, look at it; get a “quick idea” on a topic and move on to something valid.
