Ways to use / What to Include in a Personal Web Presence
My Personal Web Presence or portfolio is an ever-changing work in progress. I have included basic elements to this point such as: an introduction, education, blog, contact form, and links required by this technology course. I still need to add my philosophy page and make the page more appealing to the eye. I am still deciding on what else to include. Perhaps I will gain some ideas from this assignment. Any ideas from my fellow classmates are welcome. Apps in Education Well I do not have a smart phone. So, I guess one could say I have a dumb phone(see pic on left). Did I really just write that? I am not very familiar with apps at all. My phone is an old Razor. I am definitely in need of upgrade and possibly a new carrier. I hear friends, colleagues, and many others talking about “apps”. I am too cheap to pay for the internet on my cell phone. Or am I the smart cautious one? The cell providers are always trying to lure you into a contract, and later whip out the list of fine print that was agreed upon. I know of one app that would benefit me if I had an iPad or iPhone. It is for basketball coaches to draw up plays. I first heard about it from the high school basketball coach. This looked useful to me. I am sure once I gain access apps will benefit me in my teaching and coaching profession. After looking at the lists of apps I am curious. How do you create or invent apps? It looks like there are many uses. Book Pro and Number line caught my eye. With one you can create a book with advanced features. The other one can help teach math skills to students. Apps could be beneficial for educational use. Top 100 Tools for Learning I didn’t realize I use quite a few of these already. For my work, I use Word and Excel all the time. I use them to type up plans, practices, and just stay organized. I use, or have heard of thirteen out of the top twenty. I didn’t realize Twitter and YouTube were tools ranked so high. I noticed my Scoop It is about to “crack” the top 20. I have learned about a good deal of these already from this course. I think I am actually enjoying learning about technology. Wow, I guess I have come a long way from my high school computer class “286, 386, 486” computer speeds. We worked on old WordPerfect and “dinosaur computers”. I believe I have dated myself. Now I feel old. Online Productivity Tools
I signed up for 30 Boxes. I already feel more organized. I like the weather forecast posting for the upcoming week. That will help me personally and professionally in planning my cross country practices. I also think the “to do lists” and reminder features will help me out a great deal in staying organized. I started using Dropbox, as a backup mainly. After reading on it more, I plan to add it on my work computer as well. That will help me out in case I misplace my flash drive. There are some great tools on here. I plan on bookmarking the page and using it further. Web 2.0
I have never heard of Web 1.0 or Web 2.0 before reading these articles. I never stopped to think of it like that. I always look for reviews or ratings before I make a significant purchase. An example of this is when I shop at my favorite stores Academy and Best Buy. I always read the reviews by other customers. As I read the information stated from edtechtimes.com, it is incredible to see how far we have come with technology and how the internet is used for education. For me personally, I am thankful because it is allowing me to further my education while maintaining my career position as a teacher and coach. Seven years ago I had the dream and goal of attaining my graduate degree. I was accepted to a traditional Kinesiology program at a university. I thought I had to find another job without coaching to do this. I searched every year for a position, but to no avail. With the online program at Fresno Pacific, it is giving me a chance to pursue my goals. From the information stated, many people are benefitting from internet education as well. I did not realize that the University of Phoenix had more than 500,000 student enrollments. That is unbelievable! In the edtechtimes.com information, it states how “higher education is no longer just for the elite “ and the idea of “no child left behind “ could become a reality in the future with the continued growth of internet learning. As I stated I am thankful for my opportunity to further my education as an adult. However, I do believe children need the “human” aspect in their traditional learning environment, especially in their developmental years in elementary and junior high. Technology and Career
Well I am coming along in my technology use, (more like dragged kicking and screaming). Whether I like it not technology is important in many career fields. For my goal of teaching and coaching kinesiology classes at the college level it is a must. With this is mind, I am learning some valuable things in this class that should carry over into my future career. I have not been a huge fan of Facebook and Twitter. I used Facebook occasionally, with extreme caution prior to this course. It is “where the people are”, as Dr. Sailor mentioned. For that reason alone is good to become more familiar with it. As for Twitter, I am gaining followers, yet I have no idea who they are. The jury is still out on this for me. I feel like I am learning some new and interesting things about technology. This is interesting and should prove to be a great benefit in my future goals. |
