Statistical Tools
I really enjoyed reading the sports statistics pages. There is a lot of valuable and interesting information on the sites. I can pick a sport and see history, stats, current trends, and much more. I could spend hours at a time on there! I think it could be valuable to those in sports journalism as well. I also found it interesting there are useful online journals about sports and sports science. I remember reading hard copies of those during undergraduate work. The bottom line is this site will be bookmarked and referred to in my future. Pros and Cons of Portfolio, Personal Web Page, and Linked In
Before taking this class, the portfolio was all that I was accustomed to using in my career search. The portfolio, the web page, and Linked In all play an important role in helping ones job search. The portfolio is a good tool to represent oneself to perspective employers. It allows interviewers to have something physical in hand showing ones skills. The personal web page on the other hand allows for people to view many sites, links, and online data. I think this is important to demonstrate technology usage and computer skills. It is also allows the owner to display creativity in design. Another benefit is allows for many links to be added related to my career. I have not used Linked In much. I do think it has a professional look to it. I am not sure if I like it using my contact list as it does. I think the portfolio, the personal web page, and Linked In are all important in their own way. I now see that it is beneficial to use them all versus just one or the other. When used together they allow potential candidates to paint a positive overall view of themselves. My Thoughts on Networking Strategies For me my much of my networking involves the teachers and coaches I encounter on a yearly basis. This includes the high school coaches I assist, as well as, the other junior high coaches I coach against. I also try to maintain connections with coaches and educators that have migrated to other locations. I do maintain communication with a mentor and former instructor of mine from college. This is a valuable contact to me. It allowed me to speak at a college faculty function where former students have graduated and become successful in a career. This allowed me to meet the Vice Chancellor of the college. One way I network is at yearly conventions for coaches or physical education teachers. I am a member of Texas High School Coaches Association and Texas Alliance for Health Physical Education Recreation and Dance. I attend the THSCA and the TAHPERD conventions on a regular basis. By staying connected through these organizations, it allows me to stay current in my field and network at the conventions at the same time. I think networking is definitely an area I still need to improve in. Thoughts on Wikis in Education
After watching the short video on wikis, I believe there are some positive uses for them in the education system. I think can help a great deal in the planning of lessons and curriculum. This could be effective at both the individual school level and the district level. Meaning all of the schools could link to a wiki to coordinate material being taught. The district and those professionals overseeing this could assist the schools in this accordingly. I enjoyed the article “Considering a New Avenue of Communication: The Weblog” by Steve Cernohous. I liked how he referred to the blog as a personal diary exposed and maintained on the internet for all to see. I never thought of it in such terms. He wrote of educational importance and how the blogs can help the students develop in their own collaboration using blogs. I thought it was important that blogs can also help the educator learn more about students’ prior knowledge and the educational perspective they reveal. My thoughts on wikis simply are they can be used as a collaborative tool in education. I do not believe they should be cited or relied upon solely for pertinent information. In other words, look at it; get a “quick idea” on a topic and move on to something valid. |
